Rome
Rome

When I began the Roman series in 1973, I had just finished the Antigua Black book that was almost exclusively focused on people. People subjects are challenging as they require constant interaction and dynamic change with live human beings.  I wanted to photograph inanimate objects, stones and fountains and architecture…anything that did not talk.  I needed the peace not to be obliged to interact.  I loved the silence broken only by the trickle of water from a fountain.

In 1976 I returned to Rome and finished the series:  some are of famous fountains and statuary and others are of small found courtyards and passages, discovered as I meandered on my own around the city.
